Internships
Research Internships 2008-2009
Hanne Blank is currently interviewing for research
internships for the 2008-2009 academic year. Interns may be
local to the Baltimore area or long-distance, assuming other criteria
can be met. Internships are unpaid
but compensation-in-kind in the form of writing mentorship,
editorial guidance/assistance, and similar have often been arranged for
interns in the past. (And of course, interns get a shout-out
in the acknowledgements page for the finished book.)
Job
Description:
Research interns will assist in finding, organizing, and
evaluating research materials for current book projects.
Research may include database and online catalog searching,
creating specialized and/or annotated bibliographies, transcription,
contacting interviewees, writing praecis, and researching copyright and
permissions issues as well as the compilation of issue-focused
research dossiers. Interns typically work between 5-10 hours
weekly. Geographically local interns may be asked to work
with me in my home office or in regional libraries.
Required Skills:
Applicants must have
- very advanced reading and writing skills
- good typing/word processing skills
- ample experience using academic and research libraries
- familiarity with database searching
- experience with creating abstracts or praecis
Applicants must further have regular computer and e-mail
access and be responsive to e-mail.
Additional Desired
Skills:
Additional, but not required, skills desired
include
- ability to read and/or speak languages other than
English, particularly Latin, German, French, Spanish, and Italian
- experience or background with women's studies, gender
studies, cultural history, history of medicine, or the history of
sexuality
- experience or background with feminist issues and
politics, GLBTI issues, and/or queer theory
How To Apply:
Please e-mail a cover letter, resume, and a one-page
abstract/praecis of a book you've read recently to Hanne Blank
at hanne.blank@gmail.com. Be sure to indicate whether you
will be available for fall semester (October-January), spring semester
(January-May), or both.
Applications are due by September 20, 2008 for fall
semester.
NOTE: Please be aware that due to the sexually explicit
nature of some of the materials I
encounter and review in my research process, I can only consider
applicants over the age of 18.
